Inu-yasha, a manga and anime series by Rumiko Takahashi (creator of Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, and others)
This is an shonen (action-oriented), romantic comedy. The story is about a girl, Kagome, who falls into a well and is transported back in time to feudal Japan, where magic is real, and even common. Kagome turns out to be the descendant of a very powerful young woman who sealed with an arrow the dangerous hanyou (half deamon) InuYasha to a tree. Kagome loses the Shikon no Tama (Jewel of Souls), a powerful magical artifact, and frees InuYasha to help her recover it.
Soon after they recover the Shikon, it is lost again, and Kagome shatters it as she tries to recover it. The peices scatter far away, and the series tells of Kagome and InuYasha's exploits as they search for the shards of the Jewel of Souls. As they search, they meet new people who join them on their quest for various personal reasons. Throughout the story Kagome and Inuyasha come closer and closer to having deep feelings for each other. The romance remains as a side plot for most of the story, and for the rest of the time, focuses on action-oriented plot.
The manga was simultaneously released in Japan and the USA, which is very unusual.
Inu-yasha was first broadcast in America on Cartoon Network.
